The Amazing Mendes Cohen

Mendes Cohen was born in Richmond in 1796, moved to Baltimore with his family when he was 12 years old, and died at age 84 in 1879.

Among Mendes’ many accomplishments:

• He fought bravely at Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

• He defended his family’s business before the Supreme Court.

• He spent three years traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East where he met with dignitaries, overcame traveling hazards such as shipwrecks, amassed an impressive collection of Egyptian antiquities, and espoused democratic principles.

• He was a devoted son and brother whose many contributions locally helped establish the foundation of a strong Jewish community in Baltimore.
